This male was slowly flexing its wings, which disclosed a scent pouch on the left hind wing near its abdomen.

Often, when monarchs don't cooperate -- by flexing their wings on the wrong side of a fence, for example -- we're stuck with making educated guesses about the sex. Here, several veins on the right front wing had a "thin" appearance, so I guessed "male" -- which proved to be correct.
